An Emergency Vehicle / Disaster Prep Event at the Tokushima Zoo, 03-03-2013

There was a fun event at the zoo today.  Naoko and Haruto picked me up at 10am and after depositing a ton of vegetables (2 large diakon with the yummy tops, spinach, mizuna, huge turnips and a giant bag of delicious ponkan (a kind of orange)) in my apartment we took off for the zoo.  I spent a good part of the ride thinking of what to do with the bounty of vegetables.  Lots of nabe (hot pot), I'm going to try making pickles with some of the turnips and spinach with bacon or in soup.  Maybe some simmered daikon as well.

It was a funny day, a cold wind and very cold when out of the sun but okay, though not warm, in the sun.  Clouds coming and going so hats and gloves on and off and on again.  We started by touring the zoo and remember our first trip there together just about a year ago.

A squirrel monkey - we were in the cage with them.

After seeing all the animals we headed over to the area where the fire trucks, ambulances, etc. were.  There was a nice turn-out.  Enough people so you didn't feel bad for all the work the people put into it, but not so many where we had to wait on line forever.

A small superhero show.

The fun continued...
Story and song time.

Afterwards we went to Matsuri Sushi.  A different conveyor belt sushi place.  There are 4 or 5 different ones around, basically the same but each with a few different dishes, themes, or gimicks.  This one had really good udon (for Y105) and a race car brings your orders to your table.  I don't think the sushi is as fresh as Sushi Rou.   The things going around looked a little old.  But we ordered most everything and it was very good.  My favorite was a very briefly grilled clam type thing with a dot of butter on top, and then the tempuraed head of a big shrimp.   AND they had an ice cream bar.  Since I wasn't riding my bike....  Melon, lemon, orange and ramune (soda) sherbert, chocolate, marble, custard pudding, green tea, chocolate and strawberry ice cream.  Yes I tried it all (little bits) - except vanilla, who needs vanilla...
