Boy's Day display |

at Hiroko's house. |
I've been in the house too much (because of the weather) bored and homesick. So today was really fun. I went with Naoko and Haruto to a tulip 'festival' in a neighboring town, Kitajima. Festival is in quotes because it took place in the parking lot of the small sports center and the flowers were across the street in a small field. We had seen the tulips last year but they were well past their prime then. Today they were perfect (mankai = full bloom). AND there were other events we hadn't been aware of! First a very nice little 'tea ceremony', then a 'hero show' and before we left there was a wonderful Okinawan style (they were actually from this area) taiko (drum) performance. You can see from the costumes, and maybe the style of drums as well, that it was more Chinese than Japanese, as is the case with many things in Okinawa. There was a playground nearby for Haruto, last year he was too scared to go on anything, this year we had trouble getting him off! To top off the day we went to an Italian restaurant for lunch. Delicious!

The biggest piece of cake I've seen
